WHY DID YOU DOUBT?
Minister Lisa Kane
February 10, 2026

Objective:
To reveal how doubt enters the believer’s life through fear and divided focus, and to teach how faith without doubt is restored through humility, submission to God, and trust in His Word. This teaching aims to help believers recognize the spiritual consequences of doubt, understand its connection to double-mindedness, and learn how to return to joy, stability, and mountain-moving faith by drawing near to the Lord.
Synopsis:
In Why Did You Doubt?, Minister Lisa Kane examines the moment Peter stepped out of the boat in faith and then began to sink—not because Jesus failed him, but because fear redirected his focus. Though Peter was walking in obedience, doubt entered when he looked at the boisterous wind instead of keeping his eyes on Jesus. Jesus’ question, “Why did you doubt?” exposes a truth believers still face today: doubt does not negate faith, but it interrupts it.
This teaching connects Peter’s experience with James’ warning that doubt makes a person unstable, tossed like waves by the sea. Doubt is shown not merely as uncertainty, but as a spiritual condition that steals joy, silences praise, and produces inward conflict. While God gives humanity the ability to question and choose belief, doubting the Word of God becomes a hindrance when it replaces trust.
Minister Kane emphasizes that overcoming doubt begins with humility. Drawing from James 4, believers are called to submit to God, resist the enemy, cleanse their hearts, and draw near to the Lord. Doubt often leads to mourning and heaviness, but as faith is restored, joy and rejoicing return—just as Psalm 126 promises.
The teaching also confronts the tension many believers feel: wanting to believe fully while remembering past disappointments. Even when faith feels imperfect, the Word assures that God’s promises will stand. Mountains will fall—whether now or in God’s appointed time—because His Word never fails. Rather than hiding doubt, believers are encouraged to bring it honestly before the Lord and ask Him for help.
This message concludes with a prayerful call to walk in faith without doubt, trusting that God is fully in control. Through humility, repentance, and surrender, believers can move from instability to confidence, from fear to joy, and from doubt to unwavering faith in Christ.
Inspired Teaching:
Matthew 14:25-33
25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, [c]“Be of good cheer! [d]It is I; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw [e]that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the boat [f]came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”
James 1:6-8 NKJV
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Well, this is interesting. Peter, when walking on the water toward Jesus doubted because he saw that the wind was boisterous and he became afraid.
Then James tells us that doubts are like waves of sea driven and tossed by the wind…in essence calling that person a double-minded person who is unstable in all his ways.
Here’s the definition of doubt from dictionary.com:
As a verb: to be uncertain about; consider questionable or unlikely; hesitate to believe.
As a noun: a feeling of uncertainty about the truth, reality, or nature of something.
God gave us the ability to question things and to choose whether to believe or not, which is good.
Sometimes, though, we doubt or don’t believe something the Word of God tells us and that becomes a hindrance against us.
But this also means that God gave us the ability to overcome doubt.
James 4:7-10 NKJV
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
It starts with humbling ourselves before the Lord and He will lift us up.
Whenever we have issues of faith in which we doubt, we need to go before the Lord and put Him first through humility and then give it to Him. He will take care of it.
Back to James 4:9, because you doubt, you mourn and weep and laughter and joy becomes gloom.
Have you ever wondered about why you don’t feel like praising or laughing or having fun? Maybe you’re doubting something that the Lord is showing you. Get before the Lord and humble yourself. Put Him first and ask Him to help with your doubt or lack of faith, and/or lack of belief.
Psalm 126:6 NKJV
6 He who continually goes [a]forth weeping,
Bearing [b]seed for sowing,
Shall doubtless come again [c]with rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him.
Once you don’t doubt, rejoicing comes back.
Matthew 21:21 NKJV
21 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.
Wow. If I don’t doubt…you should hear the thoughts going through my mind right now. I want to believe. I don’t want to doubt and yet, I’ve tried this before and nothing happened.
But you know what, I believe that it will happen because of prophecy over the mountains that is coming. The mountains will fall…
Ezekial 38:20 NKJV
20 so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’
There’s a day that’s coming when those mountains will fall. So, even if I go and cast down a mountain and throw it to the sea today, I know it will happen in the future because I doubt.
I can’t picture myself having no doubt in this situation and that’s unfortunate.
So, I humble myself before the Lord and ask Him to help me so that I can have faith without doubt to move mountains.
Romans 14:23 NKJV
23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is [j]sin.
Dear Jesus, help me walk in faith and to not doubt. I walk to walk in Your joy and know that You have everything in control. In Jesus’ Name Amen!
