PSALM 133: THE POWER OF UNITY
Pastor Marcos Marrero
23 September 2023

Objective:
The objective of this lesson is to highlight the spiritual power and blessing that flows from unity among believers. Drawing from Psalm 133, the teaching aims to show that unity is not merely harmony among brethren but the very channel through which God releases His grace, love, anointing, and abundant life into His people. The lesson emphasizes how Christian fellowship is as essential as worship, and how unity unlocks the commanded blessing of eternal and abundant life.
Synopsis:
In Psalm 133: The Power of Unity, Pastor Marcos Marrero explores the richness of unity among God’s people as described in Psalm 133. He begins by underscoring that unity embodies the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14). True fellowship and love among believers are seen as an act of worship, just as important as direct worship to God.
Unity is compared to the anointing oil poured upon Aaron the High Priest, symbolizing how the grace of Christ begins at the Head and flows downward to the rest of His body, the church. This oil represents God’s grace that allows believers to love and accept one another despite imperfections, sustaining them through the love of God and the ongoing work of sanctification.
The psalm then likens unity to the refreshing dew of Hermon descending on Zion, symbolizing spiritual vitality and abundance. Pastor Marcos explains that while many believers possess eternal life through salvation, abundant life is unlocked when we dwell in unity. It is there—in the Spirit of unity—that God commands His blessing: life forevermore (Psalm 133:3). This unity not only breaks the yoke of oppression but also releases God’s provision, guidance, and abundant spiritual life (John 10:10; Isaiah 48:17).
The teaching concludes that living in unity is both a command and a key to experiencing the fullness of God’s blessing, as His grace, love, and fellowship flow unhindered among His people.
Inspired Teaching:
Psalm 133:1 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
In unity we find the demonstration of the power of the Grace of Jesus in conjunction with the acceptance of the Love of God, all rolled into one in the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 13:14 “The Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of God, and the Communion (fellowship) of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.”
The grace of Jesus and the love of God flourish when we share them through communion or fellowship with one another. As my spiritual father, the Rev. Herb Ezell used to say: “Christian fellowship is just as important as Christian worship”. He understood that to love one another and to share with one another is in essence an act of Christian worship.
God compares the act of brethren dwelling together in unity with the pouring of precious oil upon the head, and having that oil running down to the beard, even down to the edge of His High Priest’s garments.
Psalm 133:2 “It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments.”
The spiritual application of the anointing with oil is that it begins with the head. Jesus of course is the head—in this case it begins with the demonstration of the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. Why? Because we are all humans and as we come in contact with one another on a regular basis God’s Grace is indispensible.
While we were still sinners Christ died for us, and while we are still imperfect His grace stays with us who have been born again and are part of His church, the church of the firstborn.
Hebrews 12:23 “To the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect.”
We believers were made just or righteous because of the grace of God and the blood of Jesus, while our perfection is still a work in progress; we have the love of God to sustain us, but it is up to us represented by the beard and the garment to allow that anointing oil to flow through us and give us the grace to love and accept one another along with our imperfections.
Psalm 133:3 “It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing—Life forever more.”
John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
Many of us have the life of Christ because we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, but sadly, many of us lack the abundant life that has been promised to us. At the end of Psalm 133 we are given the key that unlocks the secret to the abundant spiritual life that we desire:
There the Lord commanded the blessing—Life forever more.”
Where? It is the flowing of the anointing oil that breaks the yoke of oppression! And as we abide in this Spirit of unity, the blessings that God commanded are released upon His holy people, even those who abide in the power of His grace, live and are sustained by the demonstration of His love towards us and are willing to live in the fellowship of His Holy Spirit.
Isaiah 48:17 “Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go.’”
