For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.” NIV It is hard for us to understand the context in which the early church was fashioned. The names Thessalonians, Corinthians, Ephesians, Galatians, and many others immortalized in the New Testament have a kind of romantic air for those of us who read about them and receive encouragement from their letters after our salvation. We seem to forget that these were people deep in darkness, depraved, immoral, totally debased by their idolatry and paganism. Such was the power of the Apostolic Church Age, that today when we read about them, we do not see them in the historical bad light of where they came from. That is the power of intercession at its best, able not only to transform individuals, their cities and their future, but even their polluted past was expunged it seems. What drove those early prayer warriors in the face of such tremendous spiritual opposition and seemly astronomical odds against them? “For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.” Intercession was their life! Just the news that the Thessalonians were standing firm in the faith gave great encouragement to the laborers, to the point of shouting “now we are really alive.” Imagine that, can you see yourself getting that excited after hearing good news about people you have been interceding for in a faraway place? “The joy we have in the presence of our God because of you.” I believe it wasn’t necessarily their joy they were rejoicing over as much as the joy reflected from the presence of the Lord. It was a joy so strong that the memory of distress and persecutions just faded far into the background; a joy that moved them to pray more earnestly night and day for another open door where they could supply more to whatever the objects of their prayer might be lacking in their faith. 2 Corinthians 1:4 “Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” I believe the power to steadfast intercession flows from a graceful heart that has been delivered from the power of darkness to the understanding of the magnificence of God’s marvelous light. It is the liberty we’ve experienced that drives us to proclaim freedom for those who have been taken captive. If the precepts we have presented here bring radical deliverance to the soul of the readers through the power of the love that Jesus clearly demonstrated to us, then how can we keep it to ourselves? How can a blind person whose eyes have been healed allow those who remain blind to fall into the pit? If there is any reason at all for the pain caused by our past sins to remain vivid in our hearts, it has to be so that we can identify with the target of our intercession. We have peace, the peace of God. We know forgiveness because of His great love. We walk in victory because of His covering anointing that leads triumphantly. We retain the painful memories so that when we see the lost without hope, we don’t give up! We identify with their pain, we feel their hopelessness, we sense their darkness, we can almost taste their bitter tears, but still, we don’t give up! We know life and we know it in great abundance, so we fight on. Their rejection will not deter us, their persecution will not discourage us, their indifference will only make us more determined to continue to battle on behalf of their broken souls. We pray in secret for the manifestation of God’s light to shine in their darkness. We speak prophetic words over their lives that blow away the gloominess that hang over their lives, the same way gales blow away the storms. We divest ourselves of our frailties and limitations so that we can, as empty vessels, be filled with our Lord’s radiance that brings life and peace. We proclaim to a wounded and hurting world that there is hope. We manifest the power of the dominion that has been restored to us in the Name of Jesus over the agents of deceit. We bind the merchants of death by executing over them the Written Word. 1 Corinthians 15:5458 “…‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle (dwelling place).” There has always been oppression from God’s enemy Satan against those whose desire is to do God’s will. In many instances some even experience greater persecution than others. It is like that today as well. But there is a kind of persecution that those who experience it, feel like they have been personally targeted. And it soon becomes obvious to them that in order for them to be delivered from such persecution that they need to be personally vindicated. 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear (endure) it.” It is true that all persecution is such as that which is common to man. But it is also true that some are able to endure more than others, so that the intensity of the persecution may vary from one individual to another. 2 Corinthians 12:7 “And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.” It is also true that for those who are seeking and receiving spiritual revelation from the Lord, in order to keep their pride at bay, the Lord allows them to endure greater persecution than others, but never more than that which they are able to endure. We see this with people who are placed in high positions of spiritual authority. They have to endure greater waves of persecution, in order to keep them from giving into the pride that follows their high position which would cause them to fall. That is why the Bible warns against installing untested novices in high positions of authority, for they will not be able to endure the level of persecution that naturally follows such high positions. Psalm 43:1 “Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!” It is clear from the opening of Psalm forty-three, that the psalmist is dealing with the kind of persecution that has targeted him personally. Here we see an opportunity to learn how to deal with this kind of personal persecution and how to discern the difference between this kind of persecution and that which is common to man. It appears that the origin of this temptation was an ungodly nation who had targeted individuals like the writer of this Psalm for personal attacks. It also involved a deceitful and unjust man who was personally, unjustly, and deceitfully, attacking the writer of this Psalm and those like him. Psalm 42:10 “As with a breaking of my bones, my enemies reproach (revile) me, while they say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’” The difference between the temptations which are commonly natural to all believers, and the persecutions that arise out of an ungodly nation is the unleashing of the demonic hordes that are able to afflict a nation who has turned from God to the wickedness of this world. Proverbs 14:34 “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” These demonic hordes target those who are spiritual and who are able to warn the nation of the dangers into which it has fallen. Judge, after judge, after judge, keep ruling against the will of the American people. It seems that no matter what good moral laws we pass, what constitutional amendments we write and vote into law, all it takes is one federal judge to declare it null and void. The high stakes of this spiritual warfare are enormous, for the future of the nation, and to a lesser degree, the future of the world is being decided. Psalm 43:2 “For You are the God of my strength; why do You cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” Like the psalmist, we end up feeling rejected and left out by God Himself. How can we stand up against these demonic hordes that are running rampant against our nations? Let’s take another look into our opening text. Psalm 43:3 “Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle.” Light, or enlightening truth from God is the only thing that is able to drive away any and all demonic hordes from our midst. However, this powerful force of deliverance needs a dwelling place, a tabernacle in this earth in order to be successful. In order to become a tabernacle for God’s delivering power, we have to enter into His holy hill and abide with Him in His tabernacle. We dealt with this in the previous lesson; according to Psalm 24, only those who have clean hands and a pure heart, who have not lifted up their souls to idols nor sworn deceitfully are able to receive this power. Psalm 24:3-4 “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.” Now, more than ever before, fellowship with this world system can have disastrous consequences on our ability to powerfully intercede against all the evil forces that war from within our nations governments against the Word of God. So that we see the interaction between the corporal and the individual. The ungodly nation and the deceitful and unjust man. David was just an individual, but he refused to compromise with the sin of idolatry. God rewarded his faithfulness by making him king of the nation of Israel, and David drove that nation into its highest glory. Saul, the first king of Israel became an idolater—for his disobedience was as the sin of witchcraft—and he severely and personally persecuted David aiming to destroy his life. How did David overcome the personal persecution that aimed to destroy him personally and the purpose that God had for David’s life? Psalm 26:4-5 “I have not sat with idolatrous mortals, nor will I go in with hypocrites, I have hated the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.” Notice how David begins Psalm twenty-six the same way that the other psalmist began Psalm forty-three, Vindicate me, O Lord. Psalm 26:1 “Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity. I have also trusted in the Lord; I shall not slip.” Under king Saul, both the nation and the king persecuted David, for Saul pursued David with Israel’s army for the purpose of killing him. David prayed to the Lord, and I’m paraphrasing: Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have not walked in their idolatry; that is what he meant by I have walked in my integrity. He continued, I did not sit with them, and I will not sit with them, the idolaters and the evil doers. I will not be a part of their wickedness, no matter how much it costs me. David triumphed over the man by refusing to partake in his idolatry, and by faithfully waiting on God and not taking matters into his own hands. He pleased God—and God gave to him the nation of Israel as his reward. The greatest desire of David’s heart was to build a dwelling place for the glory of God to rest while here on the earth! It is safe to say that God had already found a dwelling place here on the earth in the heart of David. Psalm 43:4 “Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and on the harp I will praise You, O God, my God.” It does not matter whether it is David, the sons of Korah, or us; when we make our God our exceeding joy, renounce all idolatries, and cry out to God for vindication—God’s dwelling place takes residence within us. The anointing oil distilled from the fragrance of our songs of praise breaks off the oppression of the enemy and we are able to enter into the hill of the Lord with thanksgivings in our hearts. Isaiah 61:3 “To console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” There is no doubt that the nations of the world that once honored the Gospel of Jesus Christ, have turned their backs on the God of the Gospel; they have decided to follow the god’s of their own making and imaginations. They now live with open reproach and contempt against those of us who have kept the faith of our founding fathers. They have elected for themselves leaders that represent their contempt against us in the way they govern. They have deceived and continued to deceive those who should know better, into keeping them in power. They have no regard for truth. They do not care how much misery they inflict upon those whom they deceive. Their hatred towards God has no bounds since their father is the devil, who was a liar and a murderer from the very beginning. But we know them, we know the spirits that drive them, and we have no part with them. Let the dead bury their own dead. As for us, this is our heartfelt prayer: Oh Lord, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead us. Let Your light and Your truth bring us into Your holy hill and into Your tabernacle. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of Top of Page THE ANOINTED VOW Genesis 31:13 “I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.” There are many facets to God’s anointing and to the power that flows out of His anointing, in this lesson we will deal with the timing aspect of God’s anointing. Galatians 4:4 “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law.” If you have been a Christian for a while, you know that the fulfillment of God’s promises always follows a clearly prescribed path. God gives us the promise, we believe in the promise that He gives us, and at the appropriate time we see its fulfillment take place in our lives. I believe that there is an aspect of God’s anointing, be it personal or corporal, that follows the same principle. Whenever we see a revival taking place, whether it be in a church, a city, or even a nation, it is the result of an anointed vow that persons made in the past concerning the areas where the revival is taking place. Keep this in mind, God always answers anointed prayers, even long after we have forgotten that we prayed them. I had a vision of the rapture that transformed everything in my Christian way of life back in February 12, 1989. As a result of the vision I searched desperately for a way to understand prophecy. Eight years to the very date, the book of Revelation finally made sense to me. I even wrote a book about it, it is called Man’s Final Destiny , where I put end time prophecy into the proper and understandable perspective as it is portrayed in the book of Revelation. I had gathered and compiled a great deal of notes and references while I endeavor to understand prophecy, along with those many notes I had a notebook where I had chronicled past daily reading of Scripture and the notes that I took while I was reading them. As I started to put those implements away since I now had the information that had eluded me all those years, I opened the notebook of past prayers to see where to store it, when an entry dated February 12 caught my eye, since this was the anniversary of my vision of the rapture. It turns out that years earlier before I had the vision of the rapture, I had read a Scripture in the book of Revelation and could not understand what it meant. I wrote the Scripture in the notebook and next to it I wrote an entry where I asked the Lord, would He please give me the ability to understand prophecy. So here I had evidence of a sincere prayer that I had prayed years earlier that I had forgotten, and God made sure that I would know that it was an answer to that simple prayer that I had prayed earlier by making the events to take place in the same calendar day. Both the vision of the rapture that compelled me to search and the day when it all finally made sense to me, fell on the anniversary of that simple anointed prayer. Genesis 28:17-19 “And he was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!’ Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel (house of God); but the name of that city had been Luz previously.” Then Jacob proceeded to make a vow before the Lord, and it was in answer to the anointed vow that Jacob had made earlier that has our opening text where God tells him to, 'Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family'. The prayer, the vow, the anointing, in faith believing in God’s promises; it is all a process, and a process always requires the passing of time. But to be sure, no matter how long it takes, whether we remember or have forgotten, God never forgets, for it is the presence of the anointing that serves as watchmen that are always there to remind Him. Isaiah 62:6-7 “I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, and give Him no rest till He establishes and till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” We see the same principle at work in the verse above. Jerusalem’s destiny is to be the city of the Great King, for Jesus will rule the earth from there during His thousand-year reign, when He will make Jerusalem to become a praise in the earth. Now during Isaiah’s day that future reign was about twenty-seven hundred years away, we are almost there now, but all this time the anointing has not ceased to call out to God to perform it. In the same manner there is an anointing that covers each one of us who believes in His promises, that anointing is continuously calling out to God to perform that which He has promised to do for us. 1 John 2:20 “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things (intuitively).” How do we sort all this out? We need to understand the process! 2 Timothy 1:9 “Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.” First notice how Paul makes it clear that the holy calling is not according to our own works, but according to His own purpose and grace. Grace here means His gifts for us and that before time itself ever began. Step number one: We need to get saved! We need to understand that even before the creation, we were destined, and created to fulfill a purpose, His own purpose. Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory (our destiny) of God.” But since we all have inherited a corrupt nature, we need to get saved that is we need to become born again of an incorruptible nature. Once we become saved, we are now qualified once again to fulfill His destiny for us, which when we do, it is all to the glory of God. Colossians 1:12 “Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.” Step number two: We need to answer the holy calling! Matthew 22:14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.” The only ones chosen are the ones who answer the call, not just in word but in deed as well. Matthew 6:10 “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We answer the holy calling when we consecrate ourselves to bring about God’s kingdom upon this earth and His good and perfect will in our lives. Step number three: We make a holy vow before the Lord! Deuteronomy 12:26 “Only the holy things which you have (our holy calling), and your vowed offerings (our lives), you shall take and go to the place which the Lord chooses (which is His destiny for us). His salvation for us qualifies us to answer His holy calling, and in order for us to perform His holy calling in our lives, we need to take an oath of office if you will, and the only thing that we can bring into this oath is our positive answer to His call and a surrender of our lives to fulfill it. As we make a vow before the Lord, the Lord seals it with His anointing oil, which then continuously calls out to God to perform in us that which He originally destined us to be, as long as we stay the course. Step number four: He leads, and we follow! I pleasantly remember those early days of our Christian youth, when both, my wife and I would fall before the altar of our church whenever the Holy Spirit was moving in our midst, and there we would cry out to God: we will go where you want us to go, over mountains, over plains, over seas, and we will do what you want us to do! Other than to teach His Word, I never got any specific assignment or thing that I was to do, I just served in whatever area there was a need. But as I look back now I can see how important those early day vows were to our Lord. For it was there that the Lord placed His anointing over our lives that still directs our paths to this very day. Step number five: Forsake the world, Get out of this land! As the Lord told Jacob. Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult (confined) is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” The allure of this world system is ease; live it up. Why should you suffer confinement instead of comfort? Keep it simple and avoid as much tribulation and persecution as you possible can. This so call gospel radiates out of many churches today, but Jesus warned us about this false gospel, not to fall for it. Matthew 7:15-16 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?” Remember how the Lord told us that in this world we would have tribulation; so that the confinement of the true Gospel is the world’s aim, so that if we are suffering tribulation for the stand that we take, we know then that we are entering in the narrow gate and following the road of difficulties for that is His good and perfect will for us. Top of Page FAITH COMES BY HEARING Romans 10:17 “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” There is listening and there is hearing, while listening has a more common connotation, hearing implies a more personal tone, and since the catalyst is the Word of God, what that means is that the more personal that we make the Word of God, the greater our faith. Hebrews 4:2 “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith (taken personally) in those who heard it.” The letter to the Hebrews makes it very clear that those who struggle with the promises of God, do so, because of their failure to enter into the rest that the Word of God brings to those who accept it as the final authority in regards to any issue that they are dealing with. Hebrews 4:3 “For we who have believe do enter that rest…” So that true faith arises out of a decision made by a believer who reads the Word, hears what it says with the heart, and then settles the matter within his/her heart regardless of what the circumstances dictate. If God says that I am healed, and He does, I am! For the Scripture declares this: by whose stripes you were healed (1 Peter 2:24); but you may ask, what if I am still sick after I believed, for how can I reconcile the reality of His promises with the actuality of my situation? Romans 10:13 “For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” If you’ve called on the name of the Lord you are saved! Does that mean that you are perfect and heavenly material already? Of course not, salvation is automatic, for God considers us saved from the moment that we believe in His Gospel, but our transformation is a process. The same principle applies to our deliverance, to our healing, and to our restoration, for they are all part of our salvation. 2 Corinthians 3:18 “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” Since faith comes by hearing, that is, taking to heart what He has promised us, and since what He has promised us is a process, then we better understand the process so that we can make our faith more real than the so called reality that we are actually facing. James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” So that the process of faith involves us having to endure trials and temptations until we are approved and receive the crown, that is, until we pass the test for which the temptation came in the first place. What is God’s goal for us while we are having to endure the process of trials and temptations? Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Since friendship with the world is enmity with God, and since we are now in God, the worldly mindset that we have inherited has to be worked out of us in order for us to receive the promises of God. James 4:4 “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” The mindset of the world is one of total dependency in the things that are in this world, while the word of faith requires us to be dependent of one thing and only one thing, the Word of God. Romans 8:7 “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.” The process of hearing involves a change of mind, a turning around, which by the way it is what the word repent means, to turn around and to enter into a new mindset. So that from the moment that we’ve repented of our sins before God, the process began. Let us look at the question that we asked earlier with this new perspective in mind. What if I am still sick after I believed, for how can I reconcile the reality of His promises with the actuality of my situation? Did what you believed make you less dependent on the remedy that the world offers for your sickness and more dependent in the Word of God? There is a great deal of controversy now between what the church teaches and what modern medicine prescribes, for if you tell people to be less dependent on the drugs modern medicine prescribes and more trusting in faith, you can be sued and found liable in a court of law. For there will always be enmity between the world and the Word. But what I am dealing with here are the principles of faith, I have no problem with the medicine that God has created, for man has known of the benefits that medicine provides for ages. The more pertinent question then, is this: Does true medicine come from the world or from God? Is God not the Creator? Yes He is! Then all good medicine comes from Him and not from the world, and definitely not from man. Does God use the world to bring forth medicine that heals? Yes He does, He uses people as well to heal other people, but the healing does not come from the medicine or from the people He uses, the healings come from Him and Him alone, from the One who created all things. And that is the transformation that renews the mind, and until we learn that we do not pass the test. For the world has the habit of blaming God for all the bad that it causes, and is always eager to take credit for all the healings that God brings about into the world. Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith makes that which exists in the invisible realm of the promises that we find in the Word of God, come alive in material form, faith in the God who created everything gives substance to that which we hope for. When Jesus told us that in this world we would have tribulations, He was warning us that our faith will always be tested by this world system. 1 John 5:4 “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” But with every testing we have the opportunity to gain the victory, to wear the victor’s crown, which is the faith that transcends the weariness of this world system that is corrupt and without hope. Everyday we are given the opportunity to choose what to believe. The world will always challenge the works of the Creator, will always bring into question the necessity of faith, will always deride the workings of faith, will always condemn divergence, and the reason why the world is always wrong is because it cannot comprehend the miracle of the invisible power that not only created it but that also sustains it. John 1:5 “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” But if you are born again, born of the Spirit of the Living God, the One who created everything, you are qualified to not only comprehend this mystery of faith but to thrive in it, if you do not fail the test. Colossians 1:12 “Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.” Do not let the world steal your inheritance; dare to believe the Word of God, no matter what the cost; learn the lesson of faith, pass the test and receive the crown of life. Top of Page SIMON MAGUS Acts 8:9-11 “But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery (magic) in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, ‘This man is the great power of God.’ And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his sorceries (magic) for a long time.” In Acts chapter eight we are privy to a real life encounter between the power of darkness that flowed through Simon the magician, and the power of light demonstrated through the apostolic anointing that flowed through Simon Peter. Sometimes it takes a real fake to recognize what the real thing is. When I described the power flowing through Simon the magician as fake, I do not mean that his power was not real or that it was not great, what I mean is that it wasn’t from God. Acts 8:5-8 “Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.” Did Simon Magus really believe that his power was from God? Maybe, but whether he was deceived or complicit in the matter at this time, is not what’s important here. Because when Simon saw the great miracles that flowed out of Philip’s ministry, we are told that he also believed the message that Philip was preaching, He, Simon the magician, was baptized and followed Philip’s ministry. Acts 8:13 “Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with (follow) Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs that were done.” The difference between magic and the real thing is that in magic the magician makes you believe something that is not real, through his manipulation of reality, while the real thing is always self-evident. The way it works is, if the magician or sorcerer can make people believe that his power comes from the real God, then the people’s own faith in the real God will heal them, while he, the magician or sorcerer takes credit for the miracles. So that Simon Magus had no problem recognizing, number one that, the miracles that were flowing out of Philip’s ministry were the real thing, and number two, that Philip had greater abilities than the ones that he, Simon Magus possessed, and that is why he followed Philip. Acts 8:14-19 “Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, ‘Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.’” Here we see what Simon Magus saw from his perspective, the source of Philip’s power came from the laying on of the apostles’ hands. After all, Jesus had told His apostles, “You will receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” In Simon Magus thinking, if you can own the source of the power, then you can control it, and give or sell it to whomever you want to. Isn’t that how some ministries try to operate today? Their desire is to control the actions of the Holy Spirit, and in some instances, for the right price or service, the anointing can be given as reward for their faithfulness to their ministry, or so they think. Acts 8:20 “But Peter said to him, ‘Your money perish with you, because you though that the gift of God could be purchase with money!’” Peter’s rebuked of Simon Magus establishes once and for all that God’s apostolic anointing cannot be earn nor manipulated, it is a direct result of God’s sovereign calling and empowerment. Which leads me into the reason why I am writing this lesson on the first place. Revelation 2:2 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars.” In the early church there was a flood of ministers that claimed to have the apostolic calling and did not, Simon Magus being one of them. Simon Magus has a long secular history of trickery and manipulation that he perpetrated against the church, while he claimed to be part of it, in spite of Peter’s rebuke against him. That same spirit, whose root is magic, or sorcery, is alive and well today, causing many of the saints to lose heart because of the ways that it manipulates the truth, especially as it pertains to prophecy. Mark 13:5 “...Take heed that no one deceives you.” As the return of Jesus draws near, the propaganda and manipulation against God’s prophetic truth is in high gear, as Jesus warned us. The airwaves are filled with so called prophecies of non-biblical origin, that pretend to be in the same, or even in some cases higher level, than that of biblical prophecies. Their intent of course is to equate secular prophecies with true biblical prophecy, so that when the false prophecies fail, people will fill the same way about biblical prophecy. Recent examples can be found in the end of time predictions that were attributed to the Mayan calendar, which got more credence with secular prophets than any biblical true prophet ever did. The same way with the Nostradamus predictions and the many others put forth, that were in many cases, a manipulation or private interpretation of some old sayings. The most recent case being that of the, I believe, Irish monk of many centuries ago named Malachy, that’s supposed to have predicted the names and order of the pope’s that lived and ruled long after his death. He is supposed to have predicted that the pope that was just installed is to be the last pope before Christ’s return, and that his name was to be, I believe, Peter Romanus, of course the newly elected pope selected to go by the name Francis, so there goes that “prophecy”. John 8:31-32 “...If you abide in My word, you are My disciples. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” I know that the temptation to go with secular speculation is great, but we must resist it, because it is, simply put, a manipulation of God’s truth, designed for no other reason than that of undermining the veracity of God’s true prophetic words. Revelation 3:2-3 “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.” NIV We the church, the body of Jesus Christ, are living in what can truly be described as perilous times, for us the church. Which have come as a result of us elevating secular teachings to the same level as God’s biblical truth, and in some cases higher than biblical truths. For instance, many Christians believe that evolution is part of the creation process due to the secular teaching that the earth is billions of years old. If one follows along those lines of trying to appease secularism, then before long you wind up believing that the resurrection from the dead is nothing more than a metaphor instead of a reality. I wonder how many of those secular humanists have woken up to the reality of hell and then realized that it was too late for them. Wake up! Before is too late for you. In the same way that Simon Magus manipulated truth and made people believe that he was someone great, by the “miracles” that he projected, there are many “miracle” workers today, especially in the scientific arena, that make claims and boasts of things that are nothing more that assumptions based on their distortion of reality. Do you really think that if secular humanists discover something that confirms the truth that the Word of God teaches, that they will tell you? If you do, you do not know the lying ways of devil at all, nor how his manipulative schemes work. You will not know at what time I will come to you. The above verse captures the essence of what the lying spirits of this world are trying hard to accomplish. They are hard at work trying to prevent Christians from knowing the signs of the time. Truth and falsehoods can never combine, I mean, lies mix with anything, but truth can never be corrupted. Truth will never endorse a lie. That is what the temptation of Jesus by the devil was all about. Satan was saying to Jesus, if you endorse (worship) me, I will give to you back everything that I stole from Adam and You won’t have to die on the cross to get it. Well as you know, Jesus who is Truth would not endorse the lie (the devil) even at the cost of dying on the cross for our sins. So that when Christians entertain the falsehoods and perversions of this world, and try to mix them with the Word of God’s Truth, so that they fit in together nicely, guess what happens, the truth is not in them anymore, and when that happens, they do not have a clue as to what’s coming their way. 1 John 2:4-5 “He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, (or stays true to God’s Word) is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (truth will not mix with any form of lies) But whoever keeps His Word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.” The only thing that will protect God’s church from the evil time that we are living in, is His pure unvarnished Word, His Truth, and the revelation and enlightenment that they provide to us when we do not compromise His Word. Look all around you, as a believer, do you yearn for days past when God’s anointing was palpable in so many of His houses of worship. Where has the anointing gone? So many Christians wonder today what happened to it, it left the minute they believed the lie, the second they compromised the truth. Yet that anointing never left the true believers that hold true to God’s Word, however it left with them, as they left their dead churches behind. 1 John 2:20-21 “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know (because you have not compromise God’s truth) all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and (you know as well) that no lie is of the truth.” It’s true that there is a great deal of contamination out there, and that there are many so called leaders, both secular and in the church, that do not have a clue as to their true spiritual condition. So, it falls upon us to pray and to interceded on their behalf, let our prayers for them be in accordance with Scripture, Ephesians 5:14. Wake up sleepy heads, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light! My version. Let us remember that the only thing that is going to keep us from the hour of testing that is soon coming to test all the inhabitants of the world, is our firm belief in the veracity of God’s Infallible Word, and an uncompromising belief in the deity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and His physical resurrection from the dead. Top of Page THE CONFORMED DOES NOT TRANSFORM Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” If you ask any reasonable person today to explain the disconnect that so many have with reality, they would be hard pressed to explain it, for truly everything that is going on today in all levels of society does not make any sense whatsoever. Here in the US for example, polls tell us that a majority of Americans want to get rid of their elected officials at any given time, yet every two years we have elections, and by a margin of over ninety percent the same incumbents get reelected, how do you explain that? A majority here complain that the government is too big, and that its spending is out of control, and that for the money they get from us we are not well served by our government. Yet a majority always complains when efforts are made to reduce the government and the power that it now has to control every aspect of our lives. How do we explain such contradictions? The world at large and the United States in particular, do not have a physical problem, and by that I mean that we do not lack the ability to receive information and the knowledge that allows us to make sense of what is going on all around us if we are rational, but we are not. In reality what we are facing is a spiritual problem! Some will say that we have lost our moral compass, and we have, but that is not the root of it, for there has always been immoral behavior in every nation that ever existed, including the US. In our opening text, the relationship is made between our ability to reason, the renewing of our minds, and our conforming to this world system. The more that we become one with our present world system, the less capable that we are in making sound judgments that are based in simple human reasoning; that is the point of our opening text. What is the difference then, between our present day generation and past generations that knew exactly what it was that was required of them? The dissemination of information! In the past, our world was a limited world, the rules that governed the areas where people lived back then, had been developed through generations of families that through trial and error had developed the moral concepts that they handed down to their children, good or bad, but that only applied to the very specific areas where they lived. So that there was back then a diversity of thought and many different applications of faith, that allowed reasonable people to make a determination as to whether what they believed was right or wrong based on the behavior of others when compared to their own, and with it the ability to improve their belief system where it was needed. So that there was not a worldwide uniform code that compelled others to conform to a narrow standard of moral thinking. Daniel 12:4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” The dawn of the twentieth century was a pivotal point for all mankind, for with the industrial revolution came the reality that, knowledge shall increase, and those early visionaries did not want the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be the standard by which the world became one. For in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, individuals are free to choose for themselves and their families the kind of world, or community, they wanted to be a part of, for they were given individual rights to life and liberty and for the pursuit of happiness from their Creator Himself. Socialism, however, offered a better system for those whose aim was always to rule the world, for socialism debases the individual for the sake of empowering the state. The culture of today is not our grandfather’s culture. It did not evolve out of individual societies that through trial and error had chosen to pass to their children in what they thought would be the best for them, what they commonly called, the moral values of their faith. The culture of today has been manufactured by those illuminated ones who think of us humans as a commodity that they must somehow manage through force and coercion. But we humans present a different problem for their methods of how they manage the world through the herd mentality, for we have the ability to reason and the capacity for sound understanding. In the information age, he who controls the output of information, also controls the behavior of the herd. If what our children learn in school about culture today is the same thing that they learn at home through nationwide television shows that sometimes reach the entire world, before long, they lose the connection to their heritage that is not being portrayed on these shows, especially if they are able to relate more to the belief system of a fictional family on television than to their own heritage. And as we see these things played out in television shows that deal with relationships and morality, as well as in the news and in social media, as to what is good and who is bad being reinforced daily in every facet of our society, eventually our capacity to compare and to choose between the present system and something else that disappeared or has been disparaged, is lost. That is why society is where it is today, unable to make decisions that are based on sound judgment. But be transformed by the renewing of your mind! How can you choose if you have no choice? Information is presented today by this world wide information conglomerate, as if what they believe is right and what everybody else believes, or believed, is wrong, for they see themselves as the gate keepers of information. They ridicule anything and everything that does not conform to what they present as knowledge; knowledge that is biased and based on laughable theories. But we do have a choice. Next time when some know it all tells you what happened one billion years ago, ask him to show you the video, lol. Let me show you what is more real than any empirical evidence that you have ever witnessed: The end time prophecies found in the Word of God! For they are the pages of history written in advance for all to see. Isaiah 46:9-10 “Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.’” It is not until you say no to the nonsense of this world, for this world is passing away along with the knowledge it professes, and say yes to the eternal Word of God, that you will be able to renew your mind and finally find a real choice that is evidently clear. That you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Every time I see a contest between human knowledge and the wisdom of God, I cannot help but laugh. I picture in my mind natives aiming their primitive bows and shooting their arrows at a 747 airliner at 40,000 feet, trying hard to bring it down and I can almost hear them saying, Oh, shoot another arrow, you almost got it with the last one! I know that for some who might be reading this, because you have been fed so much bull that passed for knowledge all your life that it might be difficult for you to see it from my perspective. So let me run a little scenario pass you that might help you understand the preeminence of the Word of God in all things. I was born in 1947 and let’s say that someone gets all the curriculum that was used that year to graduate students from the highest places of learning back then. Let them study those books and pass all the tests. Will they get a diploma from those prestigious universities today? Of course not! What they learned back then is old knowledge today. Okay, let me ask you this, will the knowledge that all the graduates learned this year be up to date for future graduates, let’s say sixty six years from now? Now go and get a Bible that was printed in 1947, open it to Genesis 1:1 and read it. I do not know if out of the many Bibles that I own, if any of them was printed in 1947, but I can tell you this, Genesis 1:1 in those Bibles that were printed in 1947 read like this: In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Get a Bible that was just printed and I guarantee you that it says the same thing, just as it will sixty six years from now in the Bibles that are yet to be printed, just like it read when Moses first wrote it 3500 years ago. Do you want to put your trust on fallible knowledge that is here today and gone tomorrow? Is this what you want your epithet to read: He trusted a fallacy, and what he knew came to naught? Life is a learning experience that has many twists and turns, but if we are not careful, the devil in his cunningness is able to rob humans of their God giving ability to reason properly and to make the right choices for their lives and their families lives, as we can see many today that simply do not have a clue. Don’t get caught up with this world that you end up conforming to it. For if you do, your mind will not be able to receive the transformation that allows you to think and reason as an individual. Top of Page SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT 1 Corinthians 12:10 “…To another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits…” Spiritual discernment is one of nine “gifts” made available to believers by the Holy Spirit for the profit of all believers. In spiritual warfare our foes are spirits, our ability to discern who these spirits are and how they operate is crucial if we are to get the upper hand in bringing deliverance to the believers who are oppressed by them. Matthew 12:43-45 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” In the above verses Jesus gives us tremendous insight into the why and the how of unclean spirits and how they operate. Also how they gain access into the individual. A wicked generation opens the door for widespread demonic infestation. The root of wickedness is idolatry, and idolatry produces iniquities. Psalm 7:14 “Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity.” Exodus 20:4-5 “You shall not make for yourself a carved (idolatry) image — any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.” And the root of idolatry is hatred towards God. According to Jesus there are seven different kinds of more wicked spirits who are able to interact with the less wicked spirit that claims the body that he was exorcised from as his own house. It will be interesting to know who this wicked spirit is who is able to summon help from more wicked spirits than himself in order to take back the house (body) from which he was kicked out. Proverbs 26:24-26 “He who hates, disguises it with his lips, and lays up deceit within himself; when he speaks kindly, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart; though his hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.” Idolatry in its root form is wickedness that brings forth iniquity (inherited sin) which is deeply rooted in hate, hatred of God and of everything that belongs to God. So that the primary but lesser unclean spirit that summons the seven more wicked spirits than himself after he is cast out, is the spirit of hate. He who hates harbors (summons) seven abominations in his heart (spirits) which revealed themselves as wickedness. Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit (singular) of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (these eight are all manifestations of God’s love). Against such there is no law.” Our born-again spirit is conceived in love (God so loved the world). That love manifests itself in the born-again person in eight different representations of God’s love, for a total of nine. The un-regenerated spirit still belongs to God though separated from Him, so hate which is the opposite of love manifests itself in seven different ways or levels of wickedness, for a total of eight unclean spirits. Satan, the head of the demons sums up to number nine. Every demonic infrastructure is a perverted copy of the heavenly pattern. God is love and manifests His love in eight fruit, singular as in one unit. Satan cannot possess the spirit-man for it belongs to God, so his hate can only manifest itself in seven different levels of itself (hate being number eight) within an individual. These seven manifestations of hate are called abominations in the Word of God. Our ability to discern these abominably unclean spirits and their deeply rooted hatefulness is crucial in our ability to help people beset by them to be set free. This is what spiritual discernment is all about. Seven abominations which are born out of hatred towards God. 1) Proverbs 16:5 “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” Number one is the spirit of Pride. If hate is the root, clearly pride is the trunk of the tree. Pride is born out of a hateful heart. The spirit of hate masquerades itself so as not to be uncovered: Proverbs 26:24 “He who hates, disguises it with his lips, and lays up deceit within himself.” One sure way to know if hate is present in the heart of the person we are helping is through the discernment of the spirit of pride. If pride is present, hate is hiding behind it, they go together like a hand in glove, and it is this lethal combination of joining forces which enables these other six unclean spirits access. 2) Proverbs 15:8 “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.” Number two is the spirit of Self-righteousness. The proud in heart will pray (sacrifice) to God in self-righteousness instead of meekness, not even aware sometimes of his own conceit. Luke 18:11-13 “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men — extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess’.” What is it that drives people to do what they do? If pride is behind it, nothing good will come out of it. 3) Proverbs 15:26 “The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD, but the words of the pure are pleasant.” Number three is the spirit of Gossip and Slander. Jesus told us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. We have a saying that says, the down puts down, the mind set of this spirit is to tear down with words, gossip and slander are its characteristics. 4) Proverbs 11:20 “Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the LORD, but the blameless in their ways are His delight.” Number four is the spirit of Malice. A perverse heart manifests itself through malice. It will actively seek and desire for evil things to befall others. 5) Proverbs 12:22 “Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.” Number five is the spirit of Bitter Envy and Self-seeking. James 3:14 “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.” 6) Proverbs 11:1 “Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is His delight.” Number six is the spirit of Betrayal and dishonesty. Dishonesty, betrayal and untrustworthiness is the conduct that will expose this spirit. 7) Proverbs 3:32 “For the perverse person is an abomination to the LORD, but His secret counsel is with the upright.” Number seven is the spirit of Perversion. The person that is driven by the selfish desires of their heart (lust of the flesh), will desire to obtain the things which they see (lust of the eyes) as profitable for increasing their own status in the eyes of others (pride of life). Such a person becomes perverted, meaning a counterfeit copy of their real selves, which was originally created in the image of God. The proud heart will sacrifice whatever it takes to realize the thoughts and desires of their perverse heart, they will lie and cheat to achieve their goals. In the process they lose their original personality, which was created in them by God, and become a perversion of what they were created to be. Who would have thought that hate could produce so much evil. The sad thing is that it usually begins with hating oneself. Pride is what we use to compensate for the feelings of worthlessness, and the rest just follows. Romans 5:5 “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God put a price on the soul of man, a price so valuable that could only be measure by the intensity of the sufferings and passion of His only begotten Son for us. The precious and priceless blood that Jesus shed for us has once and for all separated the words “worthless” and “soul”. They are so far apart that they are not even in the same universe. Love and self-acceptance in the unconditional love God has for us, which He demonstrated on the cross, is the key that unlocks and opens the perverse heart and releases that hateful bird called pride. Humbly and grateful the restored heart rejoices in its new found love and acceptance, and the peace of God which passes all understanding rules and guides, faithfully comforting the emerging new person which is now being built in the image of Christ. Romans 8:37-39 “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” True deliverance comes as we replace the spirit of hate with God’s love which is Spirit, and that’s the truth. Isaiah 25:1 “O Lord, You are my God.
