Top of Page Top of Page NO FEAR OF GOD IN THE LAND Written by Pastor Marcos Marrero Published on 10/16/22 Amos 6:3 “Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, who cause the seat of violence to come near.” One of the meanings for the word Fear is to have a Reverential awe towards God! Instinctively we know that God is both—the Creator and the Judge. We are also able to comprehend that after death we have to face our own personal judgment before God. But in a grander scale we also—by way of instinct—realize that all of humanity will at one point come to its final conclusion. Ecclesiastes 12:14 “For God will bring EVERY WORK INTO JUDGMENT, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.” Capitals in the Scriptures added by me for emphasis. This reverential awe towards our Creator has been written within our genetic code. The spiritual dynamics of Love and Hate and of Good and Evil are also written within our genetic code. What does it all means? MORTALITY verses IMMORTALITY! Ecclesiastes 8:8 “No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit, and no one has power in the day of death. There is no release from that war, and wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.” No one can stop themselves from dying because we cannot retain our spirit to keep it from leaving us. What that means is that our spirits are immortal, and when we die it leaves us and returns to God who gave it to us in the first place. Ecclesiastes 12:7 “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.” There is a war however, between our spirit and our flesh or between mortality and immortality; and no one is released from that war until the day we die and face that final Judgment. Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” The verse: Wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it; this is a reference to our souls which are immortal as well, but have been corrupted by wickedness and thereby in need of deliverance before we face the final judgment after we die. Ecclesiastes 9:5 “For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward…” Provision has to be made for our souls before we die and face the judgment. How do we do that? We have to believe that only God has the power to condemn or to free our souls while we are alive, if we wait until after we die it is too late. Today is the day of salvation do not put it off. Mathew 10:28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather FEAR (have a Reverential awe towards God) Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Mathew 11:29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Rest for our souls can only be found in the atoning blood of Jesus and can only be received by faith as we believe in our hearts that God raise Jesus from the dead and confess with our mouths that He is our Lord. Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED (your soul will be delivered from hell).” Now concerning the spiritual dynamics between Good and Evil and Love and Hate; when there is a healthy respect or godly fear of the law of God and of the final judgment, society functions on the premises that Love is Good and that the government’s concerns is for the well being of those they rule over; even within the enforcement of justice. Grace is the overall goal or remedy, that as long as there is life there is the hope for redemption for every lost soul. The nations whose governments functioned under the guidance of Judeo Christian values enjoyed by far the most liberty and prosperities ever known in the history of man. Psalm 2:1-3 “Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His anointed, saying, let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.” We are living in the presence of this prophecy being fulfilled, as one by one all the nations of the free world have turned their backs on the biblical principles that made them free and prosperous. What are the spiritual implications that we are experiencing as a result of their rebellion? We are in the transition of leaving behind love for what is good and entering into the depravity of hateful evil. The nations have fallen for the demonic delusion of good is bad and bad is good. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the LOVE OF THE TRUTH, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that THEY ALL may be CONDEMNED who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” Remember the Scripture that said: “There is no release from that war, and wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.” Also, we see in our opening Scripture that as this transition is taking place it has repercussions upon the inhabitants of this earth: “Who cause the seat of violence to come near.” The seat of God’s judgment day gets closer and closer the more and more that wickedness increases on the land. But God is looking for repentance, a turning away from evil. Amos 5:4, 6 “For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: Seek Me and live. 6) Seek the Lord and live, lest He brake out like fire in the house of Joseph and devour it…” In the absence of a world-wide revival that would bring most of the nations of the world to their knees in true repentance—sad to say—this is it! The signs that we are rushing head long into the end of days are overwhelming. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 “BUT KNOW THIS, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. AND FROM SUCH PEOPLE TURN AWAY!” How do we keep ourselves from falling for this great delusion? Remember always the spiritual dynamics that are involved in what is taking place. Love vs. Hate and Good vs. Evil. We must resist the temptation to give into the rage of hate, by keeping God’s Word alive in our hearts: Always abiding in the love of God that preserves us. Habakkuk 3:2 “O Lord, I have heard Your speech and was afraid; O lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; IN WRATH REMEMBER MERCY.” 1 Peter 4:7-8 “But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And ABOVE ALL THINGS have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins.” As long as our moral compass is anchored in the love of God, we will always have a firm grip on reality and a firm hold on to what is good and thereby refrain from that which is not. Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be COMFORMED to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that GOOD and acceptable and perfect will of God.” We can then see that Hate and Evil always go hand in hand, we cannot have one without the other. Hatred is the personification of evil itself, we should never give in to the venom of hate. 1 John 4:19-20 “We love Him because He first loved us. If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” Every time that we express God’s love and goodness to others we are insulating ourselves from the toxicity of hate and evil. Such is the work of the spiritual dynamics between Love and Good. Psalm 85:10-12 “Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Yes, the Lord will give what is GOOD; and our land will yield its increase.” Here we see the same spiritual dynamics at work, but this time for the Good of all mankind. The truth that springs upward from the earth is our faith in the Word of God, and heaven’s response is righteousness rained down from heaven upon us who faithfully believe and wait fervently for His appearing. Here is a prayer of gratitude from one of His maidservants: Luke 1:46-55 “And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. and His mercy is on those who FEAR (have a Reverential awe towards God) Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. Top of Page Top of Page THE FOUR WAVES Written by Pastor Marcos Marrero Republished 7/6/21 Luke 21:25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring.” If we look at the above verse from an entirely spiritual perspective, we see four places that are mentioned, the sun, the moon, the stars, and the earth, that will be hit by a great shaking, and this shaking will come in the form of waves. We obviously live here on the earth, but during those days there will be things that are happening in the entire cosmos that will clearly have an effect upon us here on the earth. Luke 21:26 “Men’s hearts failing them from the fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” When our text declares that the powers of the heavens will be shaken, it is clearly referring to both, a physical and a spiritual shaking that will be taking place during those days. Hebrews 12:26 “Whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, ‘Yet once more I shake not only earth, but also heaven.’” The number four is significant here because it includes the entire creation, both physical and spiritual. The spiritual emphasis that I want to deal with in this lesson is revealed to us in the form of waves, like in the waves roaring, that is waves making loud sounds that are audible. If you read some of my works, you know that I believe that there are always four spiritual forces that work together in tandem to bring about the conditions that God requires in order to bring about His desired results in any given physical situation. Like the four horseman of the apocalypse, the four trumpets, the four seals, the four winds and so on. These waves are sometimes revealed to the saints in visions or dreams; now there are common threads that link the different revelations to one another, and there are some very unique and individual aspects of the revelation that apply only to the individuals receiving them. Amos 3:7 “Surely the Lord God does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.” In the Old Testament, only certain people were filled with the Holy Spirit. All of the prophets of old were filled with God’s Holy Spirit, since God is Spirit and all His works always begin in the spiritual realm. Those who are filled with His Spirit are in a position to receive the revelation of what God is doing in the spiritual realm that affects us here on the earth. In the New Testament, all the believers are filled with His Holy Spirit, for no one can be born again without being born of the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized (plunged) into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” So that to His church, the body of Christ, revelation is continually flowing corporally from His Spirit that bears witness of what God is presently doing in the spiritual realm. That is why when the Holy Spirit is doing a personal work in us, it seems almost like there is a conspiracy of some sort, for we see the Spirit moving through many different venues to assure us that it is He, and Him alone, not man, who is dealing with us. And when He is revealing things to His church as a whole, many different individuals, oceans apart, will have the basics of the same revelation of what God is doing or is about to do. For that is what Amos says, God will reveal His secrets to His servants, for a testimony to the whole body of believers. My personal experience with dreams of big waves started early in 1990. Prior to my first dream, I do not recall ever hearing about dreams of big waves from any body. In all four of my dreams that covered a span of several years, there were always two things common on every dream, I knew what cardinal direction I was facing, and I was completely overwhelmed by the size of the waves that were always coming my way. In my first dream, I was facing north while standing on a sidewalk in front of a small country church. I was watching as people were coming out of the church when suddenly a huge massive wave arose from behind the little church. The wave was comprised of water and mud and was coming towards the church from behind. It was moving so fast that I did not even have time to tell the people to turn around and look, I just instinctively crouched behind a small retaining wall in the perimeter of the front lawn. I was so scared that my heart almost stopped, and I remember thinking that I was going to die by breathing in muddy water. I awoke right before the wave hit me, and realized that my body was shaking and I was breathing heavily. In the next two or three years I had two more dreams that were just a different version of that first one. On the second dream I was facing east, there was a chain link fence in front of me, when a huge wave rose up, not as muddy as in my first dream. As I crouched down and grabbed the chain link fence, I remember thinking that the impact would probably rip my fingers off, thankfully I awoke again right before it hit me. In the third dream I was facing south when a huge wave rose again as before. The dream of the fourth wave came a couple of years later. I was facing west in the South Bay area of Los Angeles CA, looking at the San Pedro/Palos Verdes hill, when out of the Pacific ocean a huge, massive wave bigger than any of the others that I had dreamed before rose up. It was made of pure crystal clear water, and just as beautiful as it was awesome. In this dream I did not fear, I did not crouch, and I didn’t wake up before the wave hit me, for even though I was very scared, I welcomed that which was coming my way. The wave went over me and through me with great energy, but I was still standing, and as I looked around, all the houses and buildings were gone, and in their place, pools of living waters were drawing in the weak and the feeble to drink freely of it. In March of 1997, I had the privilege to travel to the Brownsville revival that was taking place in Pensacola Florida. For three marvelous days I witnessed the power of God moving upon thousands of people that were gathered there for that wonderful experience. We attended the Sunday morning service before we left that day and there was a guest speaker teaching that morning. He spoke about four spiritual waves that would hit from four different directions before the Lord returns for us. Can you just picture my jaw dropping as he started his message? He spoke about a revival that was taking place in Toronto, Canada, as the wave from the north, the revival in Pensacola as being the wave from the east, the revivals that were going on in South America, as the wave from the south, and get this, he spoke about a final outpouring of the Holy Spirit that was yet to come from the west. That was over sixteen years ago, and I knew that it was from the Lord, but as you know, we walk by faith and not by sight. The spiritual decline of the last few years, not only in the churches but in the nations as well, makes it hard for me to see how and where from that final revival that I am so certain, even today, that is coming. But you know how the Lord works, just when we seem to have forgotten something that at one time seemed very important, the Lord is always there to remind us that His timing is not our timing, and that just because it has not happened yet, that it should be no reason for us to not keep looking up in excitement for what He has promised. I read a prophecy that was given by a 90 year old woman in Norway, back in 1968, to an evangelist named Emanuel Minos when he came to her town to preach. The evangelist wrote down the prophecy as she told it to him, but he thought that it was so extreme that he kept it in a drawer and forgot about it. This is how her prophecy started: I saw the time just before the coming of Jesus and the outbreak of the Third World War. Then, she mentioned four waves: This is part of what she saw in the first wave: There will be peace between the super powers in the east and the west, and there will be a long peace. Remember that she spoke this in 1968 while the cold war was raging, and it raged on until 1989. There have been 24 years of peace between the super powers of the east and west. This is part of what she saw in the second wave: A lukewarmness without parallel will take hold of the Christians, a falling away from true, living Christianity. Christians will not be open for penetrating preaching. They will not, like in earlier times, want to hear of sin and grace, law and gospel, repentance and restoration. There will come a substitute instead: prosperity (happiness) Christianity. Here is part of what she saw in the third wave: People will live together like married without being married...TV will be filled with such horrible violence that it teaches people to murder and destroy each other, and it will be unsafe in our streets. People will copy what they see. This is some of what she saw for the fourth wave: I will not see it, but you will. Then suddenly, Jesus will come and the Third World War breaks out. It will be a short war... All that I have seen of war before is only child’s play compared to this one. I wrote some of what she saw in her vision and some of what I saw in my dreams, to show those of you that might have experienced something like what she or I’ve experienced, that even though our perspectives differ greatly, there is a common thread that unites the flow of the revelations. In her case she saw peace in the first wave, when the first seal was opened after Jesus rose from the dead. The spirit of antichrist was released which is still very much at work today to bring forth a false peace. In my first wave I saw extremely polluted waters/doctrine sneaking behind the church. That explains why in her second wave she saw unparallel lukewarmness and a falling away from true living Christianity, for they are the results of demonic doctrines introduced to the church. But the key point that I want to emphasize is in the fourth wave, for that is when the powers of the heavens are shaken, and the Lord is revealed, and from her perspective she saw the start of World War Three. Now let me show you two different perspectives from Scripture about that same event. Revelation 6:12-17 “I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake (in the earth); and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon (remember our opening text) became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free men, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?’” From this perspective we see that the land of Israel has been invaded by an army of a confederacy that's lead by Gog, of the land of Magog, from the uttermost north, according to Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39. Most of the people that you see running for the bomb shelters in Revelation chapter six are about to be wiped out by the wrath of the Lamb as He returns to show Himself holy before the nations of the world, and to save the people and the nation of Israel from sure destruction. Acts 2:19-21 “I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” From Joel’s perspective, whom Peter quotes in Acts, we see that those who witness the supernatural destruction of this mighty army that has invaded Israel, will realize that the Lamb is real and that His judgments are true, and they will have an opportunity to repent before the great day of His wrath begins. One way to see the fourth wave is as that of the beginning of a war that will end the world as we know it. Another way is to see it as an opportunity for as many people as possible to call upon the name of the Lord and be delivered out of this world before the wrath of God is unleashed upon it, and its destruction made certain. I know that in my dream I did not fear the immensity of the fourth wave, for it brought with it crystal clear living waters for the purification of the soul, and it was made available to all those who were feeble and weak in body. Those who fear and partake of the Word of the Lord now, will not be afraid in the day when His fullness is revealed to them. If only the scoffers would repent before that day catches up to them. Top of Page DEEP AND SECRET THINGS Daniel 2:22 “He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness (that which is hidden), and light (understanding) dwells (originates) with Him.” Daniel, along with the many wise men of Babylon were being rounded up by the king’s soldiers in order to be put to death. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had a very disturbing dream, so he called on his wise men to tell him the interpretation of his dream. But for some reason the king doubted the reliability of his wise men, so he added a caveat to his request: If you can tell me what I dreamed, then I’ll know that your interpretation can be trusted. Daniel 2:5-6 “The king answered and said to the Chaldeans (his inner circle of wise men), ‘My decision is firm: if you do not make known the dream to me, and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made an ash heap. However, if you tell the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts, rewards, and great honor. Therefore tell me the dream and its interpretation.’” You can hear the desperation in their voices as they tell the king that what he is requesting of them is impossible for any man to produce. Daniel 2:10-11 “The Chaldeans answered the king and said, ‘There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. It is a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is no other who can tell it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.’” The king would not take no for an answer, so he began to round up his so-called wise men and the executions began. Daniel 2:13 “So the decree went out, and they began killing the wise men; and they sought Daniel and his companions, to kill them.” There was a certain criteria, that if met, would qualify a person to be designated as a wise men. They had to be of a good lineage, educated, wise, trainable, healthy, gifted, and good-looking. Daniel 1:3-4 “Then the king instructed Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, to bring some of the children of Israel and some of the king’s descendants and some of the nobles, young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans.” When Israel was conquered and the Israelites were taken into captivity as slaves, some of the young captives were set apart under this category, which included Daniel and his companions. So when the decree was given to kill all the wise men, they started with the least of them, those on the bottom of the list of those they qualified as wise men, in the hope that those on the top of the list of wise men, the Chaldeans, would get the message that the king was serious. Now Daniel was not privy to what had taken place in the king’s court, so when they came to kill him, he wisely asked the reason why they were going to kill him and why it was so urgent a matter. Daniel 2:14-15 “Then with counsel and wisdom Daniel answered Arioch, the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon; he answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, ‘Why is the decree from the king so urgent?’ Then Arioch made the decision known to Daniel” Once Daniel became informed, he went before the king, asked for time, and told his companions to pray and to ask for God’s mercies, so that they would not have to perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. Daniel 2:19 “Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. So Daniel blessed the God of heaven.” As we read this story, our natural tendency is to place our focus on the secret that was revealed to Daniel, in regards to the revelation of what the king had dreamed. But if we take a closer look, the secret that was revealed to Daniel involved a lot more than what the king’s dream was. How do I know? Daniel’s blessing of the God of heaven reveals that. Daniel 2:20 “Daniel answered and said: ‘Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His.’” In our present-day way of thinking, we do not put much stock to the meaning or value of a name. But throughout much of history, everything about a person hinged on the reputation attached to his or her name. Perhaps the closer that we can come today in regards to the value of a name, is if we see it as a password that allows us access to great and unknown mysteries. So it is no wonder that the first thing that Daniel blesses and gives thanks for is the name of God, which is what allowed him access to God to begin with. John 16:24 “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” The most important thing that Jesus has given to us is His name. For it is the name of Jesus that grants us access to the heavenly court. Since the name of God reveals His nature, the first two qualities of the name of God revealed to Daniel is that God is all knowing and that He is all powerful: Wisdom and might are His. Since God knows everything, He knew what the king’s dream was, since it was God who gave him the dream to begin with; and He had no problem revealing to Daniel. But Daniel’s blessing of the name of God goes much farther than just knowing about the dream of a king who had trouble sleeping. Daniel learned a lot more in his night vision that meets the eye. Daniel 2:21 “And He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” The second part of the revelation to Daniel was that, the God who knows everything is willing to give wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. And in order for us to receive the wisdom and the knowledge that comes from God, it requires that we have a basic understanding of how He changes the times and seasons, and how God is in complete control of their outcome. It is through our understanding of the times and seasons that He reveals the deep and secret things to us, as in our opening text, for He knows what is in the darkness and light dwells with Him. Everything that is going on in the world right now is a direct result of the times and seasons that our Lord has set in motion from the foundation of the world. Nothing that is happening is happening out of chance, be it personal, corporal, or natural. If we want to understand the times that we are living in, we need to understand the timing of God’s seasons and cycles. According to Daniel, one of the ways that we can observe the changing of the cycles is through the process of the raising and the removing of kings and their kingdoms. The dream itself revealed as much, to where we can follow Daniel’s interpretation of the dream to our very present day. Daniel 2:43 “As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they (demonic entities) will mingle with the seed of men (the human race); but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.” We are living in the midst of the greatest demonic infusion into our earthly realm since the days of Noah, when the Lord had to destroy every thing that had the breath of life in it. The sin of rebellion—which is as the sin of witchcraft—opens the doors to these abominable creatures to enter into our physical realm. The nations of the world have already decided that which is sin, according to the Bible, is acceptable and normal behavior to them. This world-wide rebellion against the precepts of the Word of God is what allows they, these demonic entities, to mingle with the seed of men. 2 Peter 2:4-6, 9-10 “For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly...then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority…” We have presently come full cycle to the past judgments and it is our turn now. These deep and secret things have been revealed to those of us who seek for the wisdom and understanding that comes from God and His Word. It is time for us to put our houses in order, for the days of the end are much nearer than we think, let us be wise in the wisdom of God. For I was the king’s cupbearer.” If the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and it is, then a desire to fear His name it should bring to us the knowledge of how to walk in the blessings of God. First let us understand that the fear of the Lord is the reverence that it is due to His name. Unfortunately most Christians have a casual understanding of what true reverence is; now it is true that a father who is in a position of great authority wouldn’t get too upset if his child venture into his office while he is conducting important business, but he would make sure that such a distraction did not happen too often, for that would show him to be incompetent. So that the casual child like attitude that many Christians show towards God, though at times it may not be treated as irreverence by our heavenly Father due to our child like behavior, it is something that definitely keeps us from entering into His office where the business of blessings is taking place. For in His presence, while in fulfillment of His ministry, the protocol of His office demands maturity and self-control. For I was the king’s cupbearer. Nehemiah was a servant to the king. In those days the king had unquestionable authority over the lives of those whom he ruled; Nehemiah was a slave from a conquered nation who had gained the confidence of the king to be one of his many servants that attended to the king’s daily needs. Two things that you did not want to be in those days: one who delivered bad news to the king, or a personal servant to the king who failed to satisfy the king’s request, either one of those could get you killed. The point that I am trying to make is that Nehemiah understood what proper reverence was all about, after all his life depended on it in a daily basis, his actions and behavior towards God are recorded for the benefit of those of us who have a desire to learn how to come before God and into His holy presence in true reverence. Nehemiah 1:7 “We have acted very corruptly against You, and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses.” A true sign of maturity is when a person understands the difference between the power of holiness and the weakness of sin. The reason why the basic meaning for the word reverence is the word fear, is because fear of not gaining or fear of losing our well being is what is at stake in our relationship with a holy God. After all He is holy and we are not, and without His grace, mercy, and compassion we are at a loss. A heart that deep within itself says, I am not worthy to be anywhere near the holy presence of God, will immediately acknowledge that fact if allowed into the presence of God. There cannot be any level of self righteousness within ourselves in the presence of a holy God. Nehemiah said, we violated the commandments, the statutes, the ordinances, we deserve everything bad that has happened to us, so that there is an inherited fear, respect, and reverence while in His presence that says, we are totally dependent upon Your mercy Lord. Nehemiah 1:8-9 “Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ‘If your are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations; but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling place for My name’” Nehemiah acknowledges that everything bad that has happened to them is in accordance with what God had promised, so that he is in agreement with the Word of God; but then he pivots and reminds God that along with the judgment God also had promised restoration, that is why he starts his prayer on the basis of God’s promised mercy to those who would acknowledge their sins before God in repentance. Nehemiah 1:5-6 “And I said: ‘I pray, Lord God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments, please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You. Both my fathers house and I have sinned.’” What prompted Nehemiah to pray was the bad news that he received from some travelers that came from Judah and Jerusalem. He was told that God’s people were in great distress and reproach, and that the walls of Jerusalem were also broken and the gates were burned with fire. Look at the humble heart of this man of God as he confesses before God the sins of the children of Israel and adds, both my fathers house and I myself have sinned and are responsible for this catastrophe that has befallen God’s servants, the children of Israel. In our opening text Nehemiah asks for prosperity: And let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man, but he is not asking for personal prosperity but rather he desires to be prosperous in the commodity of mercy. What Nehemiah is referring to is that after hearing all this bad news he is going to have to go and do his duty of serving the king,;a bad attitude is not going to serve him well in front of a king that does not like bad news. So he asks the Lord of Mercy for mercy when he goes before the king, knowing that he is not going to be able to be the usual cheerful servant that the king is used to. Nehemiah 2:1-2 “...I took the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never been sad in his presence before. Therefore the king said to me, ‘Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart.’ So I became dreadfully afraid.” Obviously , the king kept a wide eye upon all his servants and immediately recognized that something was wrong with Nehemiah, not that he was so much concerned about his personal problems as much as he was probably suspicious of those around him when they were not behaving normally, that is probably why Nehemiah became dreadfully afraid. He could have been accused of plotting anything against the king and executed right on the spot, but he had prayed to the God of Mercy for mercy. Nehemiah 2:3 “And said to the king, ‘May the king live forever! Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my father’s tombs, lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire?’” I am pretty sure that the king kept track of all that was going on under his palace and knew that Nehemiah had received foreign visitors, and knew of the bad news that they brought to Nehemiah, so that once he heard Nehemiah’s explanation his suspicion abated. Nehemiah 2:4-5 “Then the king said to me, ‘What do you request?’ So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said to the king, ‘If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my father’s tombs, that I may rebuild it.’” What an amazing story, Nehemiah goes from a situation of been in dreadful fear for his life, to asking for the deliverance of an entire nation in the course of one verse; one can only learn that, from being in the presence of the God of Mercy, for those who truly fear the Lord are also made aware of His great power to impart the blessings of mercy. Notice how Nehemiah says that before he answered the king he prayed to the God of heaven, he probably said to himself, What should I ask for Lord? The answer was what he truly desired in his heart and what he had been praying for: Restitution, for that is what mercy does! In those days when a king asked one of his subjects for a request it was a big deal, for a king could truly make somebody extremely prosperous, but Nehemiah had not being praying for personal prosperity, he had been praying for mercy and restoration for his people. Imagine the surprise that the king had when the request that Nehemiah made was not a request for personal gain, but made on behalf of a vanquished nation. We are told that the queen was sitting next to the king when the request was made, almost like the king looked at the queen and then asked Nehemiah, how long are you going to be gone? If there is one thing that a king understands is the level of devotion that the subjects to his kingdom demonstrate, now he understood what it was that made Nehemiah such a faithful servant to his kingdom. Nehemiah truly valued the security that a well run government offered its citizens. That is why we are commanded to pray for those in authority, for if we understand how the physical authorities function, and how they are suppose to function, and have a healthy respect for the process of governing even under an imperfect human government, then we can live and minister in the house of God, the church, in awed, holy fear and respect for a perfect Sovereign God who governs justly. Nehemiah 13:30-31 “Thus I cleansed them of everything pagan. I also assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each to his service, and to bringing the wood of offering and the firstfruits at appointed times. Remember me, O my God, for good!” If a government is going to run properly it must rid itself of bias and corruption, a corrupt government will drown itself in its corruption. Nehemiah understood how the principle of corruption could bring down the human government, and he learned that in order for the house of God to be governed well, it also had to be rid of the bias and corruption that paganism brings into the house of God, for that is what eventually leads the contaminated worshipers into bondage. Paganism is to the church what corruption is to the government. And I venture to say that if a nation that was founded on Judeo Christian values, is now under a corrupt government, it is as a direct result of the paganism that contaminates the churches that exist within that nation that are supposed to promote biblical values instead of the human paganism that fosters and tolerates corruption. Think of that, the condition of the church is reflected by the condition of the government that rules over the nation where those churches minister. Makes you wonder, doesn’t? If we want to rid our governments of corruption, then we need to rid ourselves of paganism! It could be just as simple as that.
