HOW TO DISTINGUISH THE VOICES IN MY HEAD

Genesis 1:26-27 “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…’ 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
God created us in His image, with the capacity
to speak to ourselves, just like God spoke to Himself when He created us: Let Us make man in Our image. In this lesson we are going to try to sort out the different voices that we hear in our minds all the time, by learning what the Word of God has to say about these voices.
The first and most important voice in our heads is the voice of God. His voice is embedded inside of our conscience in the spirit man, to teach us the difference between good and evil, love and hate, and of our desperate need for a living and forgiving Savior.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I believe that all humans, because of our fallen nature, are born into this world with our spirit man separated from God; we are all conceived in sin and are born into this world spiritually dead. Sanctification starts with the born-again experience, when the Holy Spirit comes in and takes residence in the holy sanctum that God has reserved for Himself in the heart of every human spirit through the process of Justification. Satan is not allowed to enter the spiritual holy place in the human heart that is reserved for God’s Holy Spirit alone.
1 John 3:9 “Whoever has been born of God (born-again) does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin (justified by the blood of Jesus), because he has been born of God.”
Ecclesiastes 12:7 “Then the dust (physical body) will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”
What does a person who has not been born-again lose when they die in their sin? They lose their soul! The seat of human understanding, which is our self-life, and all is lost because of paying attention to the deception of those voices in our heads that are contrary to the Word of God. Remember that God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
1 Peter 1:9 “Receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.”
God wants our whole spirit, soul, and body to be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. With all these things in mind let us look at and try to understand how our minds work by knowing who the entities are behind the voices that we hear.
When we are talking to ourselves inside our mind who is behind those two voices? According to James we can be double-minded or divided within ourselves.
James 1:6-8 “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
Double-minded literally means having a divided soul, or two souls contending with one another. That takes place when our voice or thoughts within us are not in agreement with themselves. What do we do in that situation? From the spirit-man let the Word of the Lord go forth.
If I am a born-again believer, I can speak to myself, or to my divided soul with words that originate from my born-again spirit. As born-again believers we have the privilege to communicate with God through prayer.
Psalm 103:1-5 “Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Here we see King David’s spirit speaking to his soul. In essence, he was speaking the Word of God to himself. Now we have an enemy that can also speak into our soul. He is called the accuser of the brethren, for he accuses us before the throne of God day and night.
We have a choice as to whose words we are going to believe! Easier said than done right? We know that the enemy always couches his accusations according to the conditions that we are in. Sickness seems more real than the promises; we struggle with addictive behavior that does not want to go away…seems like we are out of our league in this spiritual battle. How do I pray?
Psalm 86:11 “Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear (respect) Your name.”
A united heart takes hold when the spirit-man tells the divided soul: You better get it together or you are going to miss out all the great and wonderful benefits that God has for us!
Psalm 119:130 “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”
Faith opens the door that allows the light of God to enter and dispel the darkness that brought the confusion in the first place. But you must be born-again of the Spirit of God in order to work.
1 Corinthians 2:14 “But the natural man (soul) does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
Revelation 12:10-11 “Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.’”
The last and most dreaded voice comes from the devil, the accuser of all the believers who have been born again of the Spirit of the Living God. His voice is external and accusative. Everything that he says is a lie and lies are his native language. He is full of deceit, always jealous, full of bitterness, and seeking unsuspected prey.
The antidote for this supreme spirit of evil is the Blood of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. It is important for us to know that Jesus is also the Word of the Living God, so that when our born-again spirit man speaks the Word of God in faith, all the works of the enemy are destroyed in the here and now.
Psalm 23:1-3 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me besides the still waters. HE RESTORES MY SOUL; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”
The human soul is the seat of our natural understanding, and is recorded in the annals of human history, the many horrible things that Satan and his minions have done to pervert the minds of their many human victims. Even today, there are countless humans whose minds have been subjected to the terrors and horrors of hell itself.
You may be asking yourself this question: is there hope for me and my soul?
Hebrews 3:7 “Therefore as the Holy Spirit says: Today if you will hear His voice.”
Jesus came to heal your broken soul, if you believe in Him, His Holy Spirit is eagerly waiting for you to say: Come Holy Spirit I need you, come Holy Spirit I pray, come in Your might and Your power, come in Your own special way!
Hebrews 4:14-16 “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Here are some biblical words we need to tell ourselves when overwhelmed by satanic accusations:
I am not worthless; I have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus who is the Lamb of God!
I am not a failure; My job here on earth is to believe in the One that God sent. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who paid for my redemption in full with His own blood!
I am not a loser; For My God always leads me triumphantly in the battle for my soul that He has already won!
I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, Hallelujah! His mercy endures forever!
I am not lost; Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; and after all, mine enemy is only a shadow full of empty words!
Psalm 25:14 “The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant”
